Hiawatha Lewis Smith, Jr., known as Uncle Dinkle, was born January 23, 1945 in Brooklyn, New York, one of eight children of the late Hiawatha and Sadie Ruth Smith. Hiawatha was called home and departed his life at Metropolitan Hospital in Manhattan, NY on Saturday, July 16th, 2022.

Graveside Services will be held Wednesday, August 3, 2022, 3:00pm at Averys Chapel Church Cemetery, Raeford, North Carolina

Hiawatha worked for New York City Housing Authority for 25 years and later worked for New York City Court House for many years. He then ended his career at the New York City Birth Certificate Records Office where he also enjoyed working and later retired from. Hiawatha enjoyed spending time with his family and his favorite place to relax was at Bear Mountain State Park, Upstate NY. Hiawatha was also known as the life of the party.

Hiawatha leaves his wife, Margaret Smith to cherish him in memory along with their three daughters, Lisa Buffy Smith, Nicole Taylor Smith and Celeste Mack; son, Cyrus Taylor-Smith; six granddaughters, Lisa Marie Wilson, Rosa Alexia Rosario, Nia Celeste Taylor, Trinity Estelle Brodie, Egypt Justice Brodie and Kyla Monae Mack; grandson, Hector Luis Rosario III; great grandson, Reign Supreme Phillips; sisters, Mary Fernandez, Geraldine Danielson, Barbara Cook and Janet Brathwaite.
